How we are paid, and what we turned down

Four outbound links on this site can pay us a referral fee. Two categories that would pay more are refused outright. Both halves of that are written down here, because a refusal nobody publishes is not a refusal.

Four, and that is the whole list:

  • DentalPlans.com — a marketplace that sells dental discount plans in the United States.
  • Careington — a discount-plan network. Its programme is application-based, so a link here is not a promise that anything is available to you.
  • Opencare — books appointments with participating dentists, in some US metropolitan areas only.
  • Amazon — for denture cleaning tablets, brushes, denture baths and adhesives. Nothing else.

If you follow one of those and buy or book something, this site may be paid a fixed referral fee by that company. You pay the same either way; the fee comes out of the company's margin, not out of your pocket.

Every paid link on this site is an address on this domain beginning /go/, is marked rel="sponsored nofollow" so search engines do not treat it as a recommendation, and is preceded on the page by a visible note saying the links below are paid. Those are placement rules, not habits: the note goes above the first paid link, not in the footer underneath it.

The thing you must know about three of those four

A dental discount plan is not insurance. Nobody underwrites one. There is nothing to claim against, no yearly ceiling, no deductible and no benefit paid to anybody at all. An annual membership is what you buy, and what it buys back is a lower fee — at a dentist who participates in that plan, for the procedures that plan's own schedule lists, at the fees that schedule sets.

That means two things are checkable before you spend anything, and both should be checked: is there a participating dentist you can actually get to, and is the denture procedure you need on the plan's schedule at a fee that beats the membership? If either answer is no, the membership buys nothing at all.

We state this beside every link to one of those plans, on every page, in those words. It is the single most common misunderstanding in this corner of the internet and it costs people money.

What we refuse, and will not quietly reverse

Mail-order, boil-and-bite and DIY denture kits — no link, at any commission. These have real affiliate programmes and some of them pay well. No /go/ slug exists for one here. The reasoning is set out in full in why we will not link a denture kit, and rests on two documents: the ADA's October 2018 policy, which "strongly discourages the practice of direct to the consumer dental laboratory services because of the potential for irreversible harm to patients", and the FDA clearance for the resin these appliances are made from, which states the material "is intended for professional dental work only" and must be "approved by licensed practitioners before being provided to the patient".

No dental practice, chain or group practice is named, ranked or linked. Not one, anywhere on this site, and no money is taken from any. A site paid per patient referral cannot also tell you where to go; we would rather be able to say what the schedules say.

Both refusals are published here on purpose. Reversing one would mean rewriting this page first, in public, with a date on it.

What the money cannot buy

No figure on this site moves because of a link. Every price here is copied off a published fee schedule with its effective date and the day we read it, and anyone can open the same document and check. There is no advertiser who could change the Pennsylvania number, because it is Pennsylvania's number.

Nor is there any paid placement, sponsored post, gifted product or exchange of links on this site. If that ever changes, it will be described here before it appears anywhere else.

The answers that pay us nothing

Where the honest answer earns us no money, it goes first anyway, and every page that carries a paid link also names these:

  • Your own state's Medicaid dental benefit. Some states cover dentures outright — two of the three schedules on what dentures cost are public programmes that do.
  • A dental school with a teaching clinic.
  • A community health centre.
  • An itemised written treatment plan from two practices, compared line by line. It costs a phone call and it is the single most useful thing a reader of this site can do.

None of those pays us a penny. They are at the top of the list because that is where they belong.
